I was just thinking about self-deprecating humor tonight. It’s my main card, in real life and standup and scripts (via proxy). As a young kid, way before I wanted to go into this cut throat business of laughter, my dad said something to me that I have been turning over my head ever since.
My dad told me that self-deprecating humor was the best kind. I’ve always believed him, because nothing shows humility and makes people more at ease than poking fun at one’s self.
But maybe my dad had an ulterior motive. Maybe he knew early on that I was bound to be a loser, so he was making the fall easier for me. If I made fun of myself enough, it’d make it a lot less worthwhile to all the cooler kids to point it out.
I guess blogging old Conan O’Brien ads at midnight should make it obvious, no?

I was explaining to someone at work what to me is the highest form of humor: self-deprecation. It is so easy to make fart jokes or to poke fun at other people at their expense, but to be able to know yourself so well, to know your flaws, to exploit them in a way that makes other people laugh (not at you), but in accordance of your astute assessment—that is beautiful.
Which is why I love Conan O’Brien.
