Pelosi rules out House passing Senate's health-care bill
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected Thursday any effort to pass the Senate’s version of a health-care reform bill, a decision that leaves President Obama’s most important domestic agenda item in grave jeopardy.
Well, that’s that — what a great day for democracy and progress!
In theory, I’m glad the House is standing up to the bad parts in the Senate bill… it’s just that this should have happened six months ago, when they could have come up with a non-AHIP giveaway bill that Americans could get behind. Now that it was seeming a “pass the Senate bill and then fix it with reconciliation” strategy was the best shot for vast (if very, very flawed) coverage expansion, now they sink the ship. And I’m pretty sure it’s not all because it’s not progressive enough.
