Healthcare Deal Blah Blah

I’m too upset by the watered down industry bailout that Joe LIEberman and Ben Muppet Nelson forced down the throats of a too-willing Senate and happy-to-surrender White House to comment, but I did find this quote interesting:

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) sharply criticized Nelson’s abortion compromise, saying whoever negotiated the abortion provisions “threw unborn babies under the bus.”

I just wonder what would happen if Roe v. Wade was really overturned. Obviously, I don’t want it to be. I believe firmly in a woman’s right to choose (also, babies, yuck!). But if it actually happened? Shit, the Republican party would lose the dead baby card, and they’d be out in the wilderness. It might wake up their base to the fact that their lives are no better now that some teenage moms are having their lives ruined, and maybe things actually would change.

I’m pretty convinced that GOP leaders don’t actually want right to life to totally win out. That’d destroy them. I’m certain they could have done it if they had really wanted to while Bush was in office and they had both houses of Congress, but what would they raise money on, put on bumper stickers, use to drive a wedge into the poor communities of our country?

Also, as for the bill, I’m glad 30 million Americans will get insurance (though most probably won’t be able to afford the services, anyway). But this just shows who runs Washington: the moneyed interests. Anyone thinking we’ll be able to get a public option later in Obama’s time in office is deluding themselves.
