You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away — The Beatles

One of my favorite Beatles tunes. This performance is from the movie Help!.

Written by John for their manager, Brian Epstein, Lennon and Epstein had a special relationship. They were both deeply interested in art and philosophy, spending many early years together in museums and talking late into the night.

The song refers to Epstein’s homosexuality, still a taboo subject in Britain. Of course, he was completely accepted by the Beatles, John in particular. He had developed a crush on John, and told him on a vacation in Spain, and what happened then is shrouded in urban legend.

In typical Lennon fashion, when Epstein asked him years later what he should title his autobiography, Lennon responded, “how about ‘Queer Jew’?”
