John talking to Mike Douglas in 1972, about his mother, father and aunt Mimi.

John lived with bitterness over his father, and quite understandably — he didn’t see him for decades. But the truth surrounding his disappearance was something less tidy than the betrayal in his mind — his Aunt Mimi, frowning at his lower social status and disapproving of his marriage to Julia, John’s mother, in the first place, made it loud and clear that Alf Lennon was not welcome in John’s life.
